ONCE MY HOME WAS GREEN

On how to see nature as a loved one

(2021, Plants moulded in wax)

The panoramic view of the Dutch landscape, the colorful flowers in the garden, the butterflies and bees that they attract. Although it is all right in front of us, we often overlook it without realizing how important these forms of nature are for our health and happiness. The idea that this landscape will one day be flooded is not unimaginable, given that a large part of the Netherlands lies below sea level and the sea level is rising.

These fossil-like objects, deliberately created by humans, capture and preserve the remnants of the plants that will not survive a salt water flood. They provide a glimpse into an undesirable future. A future in which many vital and colorful plants are no longer part of our home landscape; A future in which fossils are the last memory of the nature that we once held so dear, but did not fight for.
